The town is set amidst some of Devon's finest rolling farmland, close to the Teign Valley, Haldon Forest and Dartmoor National Park. The A38 Devon expressway, which adjoins the M5 motorway network, provides easy access to the nearby Cathedral City and County town of Exeter, which provides a good range of educational, recreational and shopping facilities.

The reputable Stover school is also close at hand. For the sporting enthusiast there are golf courses at Exeter, Bovey Castle, Moretonhampstead, Teign Valley and Stover, whilst fishing can be enjoyed on the Hennock reservoirs, River Exe, River Teign and the Teign Estuary. There is horse racing at Haldon and Newton Abbot.
