House For Sale £680,000
The Street, Meopham, Gravesend DA13

Description
Guide price £680,000 - £695,000. Elizabeth House was built in c.1690 and registered in 1720. Built as a workhouse for St John’s church, it would have housed several families, each probably living in one of the large rooms. This has resulted in an open fireplace in four of the rooms, two on the ground floor and in two of the 1st floor rooms. Another feature from its’ original purpose, is the basement, which has two tunnels for access, 1. To St John’s church and 2. Under the Wrotham Road to what is now The George pub. The entrance to these tunnels has now been bricked up, for obvious safety and security reasons. Apparently, the church elders would access the house via the tunnel on a Friday evening, to deliver garments for sewing repair and washing and any other jobs required of the Elizabeth House occupants. Available in the Kent library records, are the accounts for the house, including payments for various odd jobs and materials. The Wrotham Road outside, was a toll road at this time and was also home to the weekly market. Soldiers manning the toll point, would cross “under” the road using the tunnel.

In more recent times, Meopham Post Office has circulated between Elizabeth House, Well Cottage and St John’s cottages opposite the church. The Post Office finally closed whilst located at Elizabeth House in 2003.

Many photographs of Elizabeth House can be obtained from Meopham Heritage, Kent County library, or Gravesham Historical. In fact, one photograph of the house can be seen above an alcove table in the Green Man pub in Hodsoll Street.

The original Meopham village, was first recorded in 788 during the reign of King Offa, and included three villages, the oldest of which, Dodmore, is now The Street, home to Elizabeth House. One of Meopham’s most famous inhabitants was Simon de Mepham, archbishop of Canterbury, between 1328-1333. Meopham was originally part of the Hundred of Toltingtrough.
