Situation

Built in the 1870's, Ruxley Towers is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Claygate. Originally called Ruxley Lodge, the name is presumed to derive from the local common land, Rockesley Common, from the 15th Century. Over the years Ruxley Towers has undergone extensive alterations and extensions and is now Grade ll Listed. The largest of these changes occurred c1872, from which the present property derives, when Lord Henry Thomas Foley, the fifth Baron, bought the property and added the West Wing, Towers and a Winter Garden in the form of a substantial glazed conservatory making the property almost twice as large. The castellated building with it's octagonal Tower, Turrets and Gargoyles to ward off evil-doers reputedley led to the Foleys renaming the lodge Ruxley Towers. In Lord Foley's day, the estate comprised of 156 acres of "….green meadow land, woods with specimen timber and choice rhododendrons on high ground with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside including Oxshott Woods, Box Hill and Epsom Downs….."
