You would be forgiven for not knowing this sweet terrace of railway cottages even exists as they sit tucked away behind the Millers Road embankment with private access. This cottage sits at the end of the terrace with a pretty front garden, three bedrooms, and a private parking space. It has been a much-loved home for almost 26 years and has been well-maintained in that time, yet there remains some scope for modernisation to add value if you choose. Preston Park, its commuter station is just a few minutes away on foot, as are some of the best schools in the city, so this house will suit professionals, downsizers and families alike.

Why you'll like it:

Sweeping up from Preston Park to meet Dyke Road, Millers Road forms one of the Brighton's famous hills, and while it feels nicely tucked away from the hubbub of the city, you are within easy walking distance of two commuter stations, the city centre and three beautiful parks.

This Victorian railway cottage sits just behind the main frontage of Millers Road at the lower end, so you access the property via the private road to the left as you come through the tunnel from Preston Park. It is clearly numbered with a parking space to the front by a garden shed, and a gate opens to the prettiest of walled gardens. There are seating areas to enjoy your morning coffee or lunch in the spring and summer sunshine, and the scent of roses and the herb garden fill the air. Bearing the architectural features of the period, the façade is white and double fronted, so you enter centrally to the sunny kitchen and dining room.

Built into the hillside, this property is glazed predominantly on its easterly side, so sunlight streams into the dining space during the morning. Wooden units run along the wall to the top of the room providing ample storage at both base and wall levels and the worktops are practical and stylish in solid oak. Within these, the gas hob and fan oven have been integrated while space has been left for a tall fridge freezer and a dishwasher, and the washing machine is in a separate utility room at the far end which is also ideal for storing household items.

Next door to the kitchen and running the depth of the house is the generous living room which is again naturally light due to large east facing windows but is also wonderfully homely with space for comfortable furnishings around a working open fire. Light oatmeal carpets and pale creamy walls serve to lighten the space further, and energy efficient double-glazed windows ensure it is even more warm and peaceful within.
Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and a spacious home office which could be a large single bedroom or guest room with a small double bed perhaps. To the front these rooms look out to the leafy trees on the railway embankment, but when the leaves fall in autumn, you can see right across the local landscape to Preston Park. There are built in wardrobes in the master bedroom, but plenty of space for freestanding bedroom furniture in the others, and they share use of the bathroom across the hall. This is classic in white and blue with a shower over the bath, and again, it would be easy to modernise in here for very little.

At the top of the stairs, there is a second entrance to the property which leads to Millers Road and has an area of garden terrace where it would be possible to grow vegetables or create a seating area which would still be private from the street – as some of the neighbours have shown. There is also an undeveloped loft space which could be ripe for conversion – all subject to planning consents of course.

Agent's thoughts:

This property is completely unique and has so much potential. The location is also fantastic for transport connections making it ideal for anyone needing to commute to London or Gatwick on a regular basis.

Owner's secret

'Having lived here for 26-years I can honestly say it is a wonderfully peaceful home within a really lovely community. I love how private it is as only the residents of the railway cottages and local neighbours use this road, and the neighbours are all very friendly. Having a parking space is also a real bonus as parking comes at a premium in the city, and you can walk to the city centre or Seven Dials within 20 minutes too. I have particularly enjoyed the garden as the weather warms as you feel surrounded by beautiful plants making it hard to believe you are so close to the city.'
