The Stables Hickleton, Doncaster South Yorkshire, DN5 7BB

A unique opportunity to purchase a picturesque Grade II* Listed former Stable Block incorporating Lord Halifax’s maisonette apartment and the historical Brew House. All with listed planning consent for 16 residential dwellings.

Description

The Stables are believed to have been constructed at a similar time to Hickleton Hall between 1745 – 1748 by the famous architect James Paine for Godfrey Wentworth, with some of the works undertaken by John Billington of Wakefield. The Stables are constructed in Ashlar limestone with Westmorland slate and stone slate roofs.

The Stables form part of what was once a sprawling country estate inherited by Godfrey Wentworth Armytage in 1789 from his grandfather, but after the failure of his banking business he was forced to sell the property. It was bought by Sir Francis Lindley Wood, 2nd Baronet of Hemsworth, in 1828 before it was passed down to his son, Doncaster's mp Charles Wood, who became Chancellor of the Exchequer and Viscount Halifax in 1866.

His son Edward Wood, the 3rd Viscount Halifax, was both Viceroy of India and served as Foreign Secretary to Neville Chamberlain in the early years of the Second World War. When Chamberlain resigned as Prime Minister in May 1940, Halifax was seen as a leading candidate to replace him but he realised that Churchill would make a superior war leader and, pleading ill-health, withdrew from the race. Halifax resided at the Estate until his death in 1931, his later years we spent living in a custom designed apartment within The Stable Block.

The Halifax family moved from the estate in 1947 to their estate at Garrowby, having leased Hickleton Hall and Stables to the order of the Holy Paraclete Convent who ran it as St Hilda’s Church of England girls school. The Hall and Stables were purchased by the Sue Ryder Trust in 1961 and ran it as a care home until 2012.
