Brief History

During the French Wars ending in 1815 with the Battle of Waterloo, Shoeburyness was an important testing and proving ranges for weaponry. Congrieve's Rockets and Shrapnel's exploding shells were tested and developed here and at Woolwich Arsenal, and weapons were brought by two barges, named Gog and Magog, from Woolwich each summer for testing. The Old Ranges were the site of the current Gunners Park.

This was so successful that the first School of Gunnery was established at Shoeburyness and in the 1840's a permanent presence was developed. In 1862, the Ministry for War purchased the land and permanent barracks were built.

There were two distinct elements to the occupiers. The Garrison housed serving troops, while the Superintendent of Experiments had separate quarters. This part later became the Proof and Experimental division, separate from the school of Gunnery, and comprising mainly scientists. The P&E was notable for is extensive employment of women scientists at a time when such opportunities were rare.

In 1862 housing was built for the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. The house now known as 135 Ness Road then named cre Quarters was built in this period. There were a number of senior figures occupying the post and during this period significant spending on defence resulted in expansion of the operations and the area was increased in importance. Palmerston's Forts were built during this period. Shoeburyness expanded greatly and the railway was extended to the town. A War Dogs training centre was established.

Cre Quarters were extended in the 1870's, 1890's and 1930's and at some stage the name changed to re House. The house is referred to in the various histories of the Army in Shoeburyness, and the current Ministry of Defence records and legal division in Somerset has full plans and details. Some are reproduced here.

In 1885 the Assistant Superintendent of Experiments, Captain Goold-Adams, living at re House, was killed when a breech loading gun exploded. Six persons were killed..

History Continued......

Some buried in St Andrews churchyard opposite. Queen Victoria sent condolences to the bereaved.

During the Great War the Experimental work carried out on site was important and a succession of senior officers occupied re House. The most famous occupant of the house was Brigadier Lickman. He and his family were posted to Shoebury as part of Britain's build up to the Second World War, and they lived here between the mid 1930's and 1948. Brigadier Lickman is listed as one of the most influential Generals of the war, being in charge of all ordnance in the UK.

During this period, Mr Churchill was a frequent visitor to the Ranges and there are many pictures of him with Brigadier Lickman. It is possible Mr Churchill visited re House during this period.

Brigadier Lickman's son, nephew and Grandson visited us a few years ago and confirmed the residency.

In 1971 the House was passed to the Royal Navy who commissioned it as a shore station, named hms Essex, know colloquially as a Stone Frigate. During the Falklands War of 1982 the Royal Navy Reserve set up a radio listening station in the house, collecting messages from the conflict.

In 1996 the house was sold to us for a private dwelling. We have raised our four children here, but it is now time for another family to enjoy the space and history of the House.

It is now the centrepiece of a low energy development of five eco houses for our family and friends, which frames its significance as part of the local community.
