Location

The picturesque village of Streatley on Thames lies in a valley on the Berkshire side of the river between Reading and Oxford, facing Goring on the Oxfordshire side. The surrounding countryside is designated an area of ‘Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and historically this was a natural crossing point of the river, set between the Berkshire Downs and Chiltern Hills, known geographically as the ‘Goring Gap’. The interesting High Street, which forms the central part of the village running down to the river and the bridge across to Goring, is now a ‘Conservation Area’ where there are a wealth of period properties many of considerable architectural merit including a thatched cottage, a beautiful William and Mary house and an Elizabethan Farmhouse, supposedly haunted by a lady in white. Following the building of the railway through the Thames Valley by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in approximately 1840, the villagers of Streatley decided the railway should go on the Goring side with the result now that while Streatley has changed little, the village of Goring on Thames has grown substantially and is now the larger village.

In the village there is a parish church with Norman origins, a luxury riverside four star hotel, The Swan, which also offers a leisure and fitness club and at the top of the High Street is the Bull Inn which was an old coaching inn when the Royal Mail stopped en route between Oxford and London. There is also a prestigious Golf Club, established over one hundred years ago, set amidst beautiful rolling countryside, a nursery and a highly regarded Church of England primary school. The local area generally is well catered for by private and state schools.

Across the river, the larger village of Goring on Thames offers a wide range of amenities and facilities including shops, modern health centre, traditional inns, a hotel, library, dentist and importantly a main line railway station providing excellent commuter services to Oxford, Reading and up to London (Paddington).

Behind Streatley the ground rises steeply where the Berkshire Downlands meet the wide Thames Valley and from the top there are panoramic views far into Oxfordshire. The woodland and hills surrounding Streatley have been acquired in recent years by the National Trust and the extensive bridleways and footpaths are now open to the public. The village has good road and rail communications with easy access to the surrounding towns, motorway networks and for London (via train forty-five minutes, by car approx. One hour).

N.B. Crossrail services are scheduled to be commencing from Reading in 2019 which together with the electrifying of the line will significantly improve travelling times to Paddington and central London destinations.

Rectory Road lies on the north west fringe of Streatley and leads out of the village to the Golf Course and ends in a further ¾ mile at Warren Farm. From here the historic ridgeway path begins its journey up and over the Berkshire Downlands, having crossed the Thames at Goring from the Chilterns. The road itself, which lies on a raised escarpment overlooking the Downs, has only a cluster of houses mainly individual and many dating from around the turn of the last century. Both Goring & Streatley Golf Course and a Professional Livery Yard are on the doorstep.
Property description

Lower Thurle, a stunning single storey property, occupies a particularly advantageous private position, to the right-hand rear of the main house, with the added benefit of the elegant features and proportions of this fine building, notably the high ceilings, wood panelling to the grand drawing room and a fireplace, leaded and architecturally imposing windows, and a walk-in curved bay window in the master bedroom.

Outside

The initially communal professionally landscaped and beautifully laid out gardens and grounds provide for an impressive approach to the property, deriving great benefit from the mature and private setting. Initially accessed through tall brick pillars with wrought iron gates, one continues along the driveway, lined with mature topiaried yew balls, formal hedging and neat lawns.

The property itself is accessed privately through a timber five bar gate, which opens on to its own private gravelled driveway and forecourt, affording ample parking for numerous vehicles.

The private gardens are laid mainly to lawn, with attractively distinctive high hedged boundaries on two side and an attractive walled boundary to the other side, providing for a delightful outlook, as do the wonderful views both back to the manor house and beyond to the open countryside

Delightfully attractive, the gardens and grounds should be viewed to be fully appreciated.
