Location

The Royal Town of Caernarfon has a population of c.10,000 and with an impressive 13th Century King Edward 1st Castle, which is an unesco Heritage Site and the even older Roman Fort of Segontium, is a popular destination for tourists all year round.

The Old Town Castle walls are still visible, where you can walk through pebbled streets and come across a wide range of shops selling all kinds of curious things. There are numerous pubs within the Old Town walls, with the Black Boy Inn being an impressive 400 years old, serving local and regional real ales. The Quay under the shadows of the Castle, is a lovely area to be having drinks at the Anglesey pub, looking out at the sunset, overlooking Anglesey and the Menai Straits. There are daily fishing and sight-seeing tours on the Menai Straits, leaving from the Quay. There is also a modern harbour, with a Cinema and Theatre complex and plenty of restaurants and areas to go for a nice evening stroll along the waterfront.

The Welsh Highland Railway has a new impressive station building on the Quay, where frequent steam trains can take you up to the villages of Rhyd Ddu and Beddgelert, a 25-mile journey through the breath-taking Snowdonia National Park, to the beautiful town of Porthmadog. Caernarfon is a good base to travel to enjoy the Blue Flag Awarded beaches of Anglesey and the magnificent Lleyn Peninsula, as well as being only 12 minutes away from the world-famous village of Llanberis and its surrounding Slate Quarries, at the foot of Mount Snowdon.
