The town offers excellent independent shops, jewellers featuring the local fossilised Whitby Jet and quirky and traditional seaside ware. Standing on the harbour watching the fishing boats return and then sampling their catch at one of a number of excellent seafood restaurants is especially rewarding. Dalby Forest offers 8000-acres of woodland, beautiful scenery, rare birds, plants and wildlife. The visitor centre provides lots of information about the forest together with a cafe serving snacks and meals. One of the great train journeys in the UK is to board a steam train at Whitby and travel the route to Pickering amidst the dramatic scenery, hopping on and off at Goathland or Grosmont as the fancy takes you. You can break your journey at these villages and appreciate the wild beauty around you. Continue on to the attractive market town of Pickering and return by train in the buffet car for a delicious meal.
