Sellers Insight

“My first impression of the property was one of excitement, ” says the current owner of this historic home and art gallery. “I was visiting a sculpture exhibition by the previous owner and was blown away by the light, spacious gallery and how beautifully the works of art were displayed. I was living in Australia at that time, but some years later when I was looking to return to the UK to be near my sons in Cambridge, I found out that the owner was thinking of selling the property. It had been a dream of mine to run my own gallery, so I immediately got in touch and made enquiries about the studio space and living accommodation. Looking at the photographs my sons had taken to send to me, I fell in love with the property and offered to buy it from the other side of the world! I haven’t been disappointed; it has been an honour to live in a building with such history and character, and I love it just as much now as I did then.”

Since moving in, the owner has made various improvements to the property. “In 2017 I had the building re-rendered with lime, in keeping with the age and character of the property, ” they say. “In the process of removing the old render, a stone in the gable end wall was uncovered, dating the house to 1658 along with the stonemason’s initials. The Historic England Assessment Team have compiled a report on the building as part of the Early Fabric in Historic Towns research project, detailing the history of the house itself from the 16th-century until the present day, through both domestic and commercial usage, as well as that of its surroundings in Ely. Other improvements I have made include the installation of deep flow guttering to accommodate rainfall from the steep pan tiled roof, and a new heritage bathroom suite with roll top claw foot bath and large separate enclosed shower.”

The local area has much to offer, too. “There are plenty of local amenities and facilities within walking distance, ” says the owner, “including Ely’s famous Cathedral, St Mary’s Church, Palace Green and Oliver Cromwell’s House. Schools, a doctor’s surgery, a chemist and a veterinary practice are just across the road, with take away food places, restaurants and a local bakery only a few minutes’ walk away as well as sports and leisure centres and cinemas. The High Street, with its shops, banks, cafes and hairdressers, leads to the marketplace and supermarkets. Bus stops are nearby, and the train station is only a 10-minute walk away for access to London King’s Cross in just over an hour and Cambridge in 15 minutes. The scenic river Ouse is a lovely 10-minute stroll away through the Cathedral grounds for waterfront cafes, an expansive antique shop, riverside gallery and cinema.”

“Apart from the main downstairs reception room (gallery), currently used as a library/inspiration room during the day, I like to retreat to the cosy first floor sitting room. With its large fireplace and electric wood effect stove and exposed wall and timbers, it is a very cosy place to spend the evening.”

“The courtyard is my favourite place in the summer - catching the afternoon sun, it is my own little oasis. Leading from the conservatory through double doors, the courtyard is offered even more privacy by specially commissioned handcrafted steel gates.”

“Many private views of art exhibitions in the gallery have taken place over the years, with guests socialising and enjoying a glass of wine in the courtyard. Running workshops in the studio has been great fun too, providing a lovely meeting place for people from around the globe.”

“I will miss the prominent position in the heart of historic Ely, overlooking the famous Cathedral and St Mary’s and Oliver Cromwell House. I will very much miss the easy access to all the shops and amenities, within 5-10 minutes’ walking distance, not to mention my lovely home and friends.”
