Seller insight - vendor interview

Situated on the elegant tree-lined avenue of Westbourne Terrace, just three miles from the city centre of London is this exceptionally stylish lateral penthouse apartment that has been the subject of a major project of remodelling and refurbishment.
“We purchased the property nine years ago and in terms of what initially attracted us to it, i’d have to say that it was a real combination of its sheer scale and potential, the fact that it offered lateral rather than vertical living, and also this fabulous location, ” says
the owner. “We have Hyde Park practically on the doorstep, which has been a godsend during lockdown; we can head out in any direction and access a fantastic array of shops, bars and world-class restaurants, there are excellent schools in the local area and to top it all we also benefit from transport links that are second to none.”
“We lived in the apartment as was for quite a while before embarking upon what became a multi-year rejuvenation, during which we stripped it right back to the bare bones and then totally transformed the place. One side of the apartment is now completely open plan and designed in a New York/Skandiloft style; purpose built for entertaining and the display of art. However, the
other side retains the original layout, so is much more traditional, and we’ve added features such as custom panelled walls in the atrium, which gives it a real touch of class. The atrium also features an enormous skylight, which partially opens, so it’s an area that adds a unique verticality to complement the lateral aspect of the apartment.”
“Every inch of the interior has been designed by my wife and I, and each element has been hand crafted so it’s totally unique, ” continues the owner.
“Exposed period beams and brickwork that has been painted white have each been made a feature of throughout, and the 300mm-wide natural oak floors seamlessly laid out over the entire apartment serve to unify each room, enhancing the overall feeling of space. Throughout the whole process no expense has been spared and the attention to detail has been minute, and the end product is, in my opinion, an exceptionally stylish family home that is both incredibly comfortable for day-to-day living and also wonderfully conducive to entertaining.”
“The large open-plan kitchen, dining and living space is one of our favourite rooms in the apartment. It was designed to exacting measurements and features an immense island, which serves as the social focal point of the room
– it’s far bigger than intended, but that was one of the best mistakes we ever made. We also added touches such as built-in wine racks that were sourced from the Champagne region, and right at the end of the island is a huge block
of oak, one of four that feature throughout the apartment, which all came from
a single tree.”* We’ve done virtually everything to the apartment and it’s absolutely stunning throughout, however there’s still the potential to do more. For instance, we have a vast area of unused loft space on both sides of the apartment to which we have sole-access, and we actually have planning permission in place for a stairwell going to that upper loft level. There’s also precedent and potential for the conversion of both the loft and outside space, subject to
freeholder negotiation and planning permission.”
