The town centre’s long-awaited redevelopment is under way, there’s a cinema planned for the shopping centre and the council is hoping to bag government funding for a rail link to Liverpool. Skem, as the locals call it, is a new town with a lot of 1960s housing, but it’s surrounded by countryside and ideally placed for day trips to the Lake District or the seaside at Southport and Blackpool. Rugby league fans can get to Wigan in 20 minutes and Warrington in less than half an hour.

This three-bedroom house is on a quiet street with parking bays for residents, within walking distance of the town centre and the 300-acre Beacon Country Park. It needs freshening up, but a lot of work has been done already: The carpets and boiler are new, the wiring and kitchen are modern, and there’s a walk-in closet in the main bedroom. Skelmersdale has a Bannatyne Health Club with a swimming pool and a gym, 0.7 miles from Helmsdale; if you’d rather get your exercise on horseback, head to the Parbold Equestrian Centre, four miles away.

For the weekly shop, head to Asda, 0.9 miles from Helmsdale. It’s the same distance to the Aldi at the Concourse shopping centre (the “Connie”), where you’ll find plenty of high-street names. The property is 2.9 miles from the Allwood furniture shop and 3.7 miles from the Pimbo garden centre and coffee shop.
