This historic town, nestled away in picturesque rural south Leicestershire is almost in the middle of the country, this is a proper Goldilocks town where everything is just right.
It's not too close to London, but it's near enough - an hour by train, or more than two by car - to suit the irregular (or dedicated) commuter.
It's small enough for the attractive centre not to have been overrun by chains, but big enough to have everything you need.
So there's a butcher, a baker and a fishmonger, a thriving indoor market and no end of boutiquey places, but also a White Stuff, a Joules (which was born here, and rebirthed the gilet for the middle classes) and a Waitrose (as well as a Tesco and a Lidl).
There's a leisure centre, and a tasting menu's worth of restaurant and the schools are decent. If you don't fancy Welland Park Academy, an outstanding state secondary, independents such as Uppingham and Oakham are within reach.
