Writhlington, Radstock BA3

Description
Formerly the site of Writhlington Colliery which closed in 1973 and measuring approximately 19.5 acres. The entire colliery site has been cleared and the wildlife has returned as has the trees. The land hosts a mixed deciduous woodland, primarily made up of silver birch, alder and sycamore, with a stand of oak and beech with hazel and holly understory, on the south facing slopes of the batch overlooking the river. On the south bank of the river is a stand of mature hazel coppice. The woodland and river are home to a wide range of birds, brown trout and an otter and the meadow has a rich diversity of native wildflowers including purple spotted and pyramidal orchids. At the top of the batch is a geological site of special scientific interest (sssi) - known for the discovery of some important arthropod fossils, including those of a dragonfly and damselfly from the carboniferous period. There is a mixture of level and gradient areas, the original colliery yard is easily accessed by vehicle and is an expansive level area. Genuine purchasers may view the land unaccompanied during normal daylight hours but enter onto the same at their own risk and no claim will be entertained for any injury or damage whatsoever sustained whilst viewing.
