History

Chertsey is one of the oldest towns in England with a number of listed buildings that remain in the town. Chertsey is an old market town, and is surrounded by green belt land and is situated by the River Thames and 18th century Chertsey Bridge.

We believe that the property was built in the 18th Century and it claimed that it’s a sit on the site of the gatehouse for Chertsey Abbey. It is believed that the flagstones in the cellar are from this building. A plaque proudly1 erected on the front of the property was painted by a local artist to depicts this, with the image coming from a painted tile, believed to be from the Abbey, of which the original is on display at the Guildford museum.

Chertsey Abbey survived two pillaging attacks by Vikings in the 9th century, to become the wealthiest house in Surrey. The Abbey had recovered by the time of the Doomsday Book and the records also show that by the Middle Ages the Abbey held over 50,000 acres of lands in Thorpe, Egham, Weybridge and elsewhere.
