"A Brief History of 8 Malpas Road -

The parcel of land numbered 8 Malpas Road was first registered on 6/11/1923. I believe it was owned at the time by the church and the local vicar lived in the adjoining property (No. 10). The large two storey building at the rear of the house was his library.

My grandparents moved to the property from Deptford in 1936 with their two children who at the time were 12 (my father) and 14 (my aunt). At this time, they rented the property. It has been the family home for 85 years. Having moved there as children both my aunt and my father spend the rest of their lives under the same roof until they both passed away in their 94th Year.

The property survived the Second World War and is the only time this property was empty for a while as my grandmother moved with her daughter to the countryside to get away from the numerous raids in the area. My father and uncle both signed up and were away. In fact, as a reminder of the war, the blackout blinds are still in the front room downstairs and still work to this day!

My grandmother purchased the property in 1948 with the aid of a mortgage from the New Cross Building Society of £800! In fact, I recall sometimes walking down to Deptford High Street to pay the monthly mortgage (in cash!)

I was born in the upstairs bedroom in 1950, the midwife cycling up from Florence Road where she lived, Dad had run down the road to announce my imminent arrival! I lived here until 1974 when I got married.

When I was born the trams used to stop outside the house and later three bus routes stopped outside - I clearly recall the two rings by the conductor as the busses pulled away. It was never quiet at the bus stop, sometimes too noisy when I was trying to sleep.

I was always out playing at the local park (Luxmore Gardens) with my cousin, everyone thought he was my brother as we lived in the same house! It was so convenient - no roads to cross and mum would call us by shouting over the back garden wall that our lunch or dinner was ready. My cousin and I would walk to our primary school (Lucas Vale) and later to our different secondary schools.

Later in life when we both married and each of us had two children, we would all return to No.8 and spend every Christmas together right up to 2008 - we had camp beds and mattresses everywhere - times none of us will ever forget."<br /><br />
