Steeped in history Upchurch lies on an ancient trackway, during the Roman occupation a community of ex-soldiers settled in the area and historians have discovered a Roman cemetery and pottery works. A hoard of coins from the first and second century C.E. Were found close to Upchurch in 1950.
The local church of St Mary's was founded in 1187 and is notable for its very unusual 'candle-snuffer' steeple where an octagonal pyramid appears to have been stacked on top of a square one. It is believed that the distinctive shape was chosen to serve as a navigational aid for shipping on the River Thames. The village has a connection with Sir Francis Drake whose father became its vicar in 1560, after having been prayer-reader to the Medway fleet.
Today Upchurch is a vibrant village with local shops and amenities, a pub, primary school and village hall and surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the coastal walks of the river Medway. Just over 10 minute drive to the M2 motorway onto the East Kent or London and not far to Rochester, Sittingbourne or Faversham.
