House For Sale £7,000,000
Midgham Park, Midgham, Reading RG7

Description
Midgham House is a magical and valuably unlisted country house set in an historic parkland setting.
The current house replaced a substantial Palladian manor house which was destroyed by fire, hence
the maturity and grandeur of the grounds and park. Midgham House today is evocative of both
the National Trust’s 1720 Hunting Lodge at Dogmersfield with its Jacobean Flemish gables (the
former home of the well-respected interior designer, John Fowler, of Colefax and Fowler), and the later Georgian Gothic Revival style. The
charm and whimsy of its setting, is highlighted by its elegant formal detailing. The Gothic arches are
beautifully constructed and provide stunning full length windows, bathing the principal receptions in
natural light and from the house itself provide a stunning sweeping view down across the lawns to the lake and pavilion below. There is a gracious showpiece drawing room with four full length
windows giving direct access to a south facing natural York stone terrace. David Milinaric, the
famous interior designer beloved by the National Trust for helping to restore the interiors of important buildings, was employed to design
much of the architectural detailing of Midgham House by the current owners and as a result the attention to detail with the comfort and style
of the house is very enticing. There is a charming garden room to the west of the house which
is wonderfully light and airy and has superb views over the gardens and lake. There is also a lovely
square dining room and charming cosy sitting room. There is scope at Midgham House to go further and alter the configuration of the house. For example, there is huge working studio which faces south with beautiful views which could be remodelled into an amazing modern kitchen which current tastes desire. On the first floor there is a spacious principal bedroom suite with bathroom and dressing room facing south with an outlook across the lawns to the lake. There are three further ensuite bedrooms. There would be scope to extend further above the studio to create more bedrooms. Buyers are asked to make their own enquiries with the local council about possible extensions to the house.

Midgham House occupies an enviable position within the grounds of Midgham Park, surrounded by beautiful parkland and open views. The village of Woolhampton is a stone’s throw away and has a variety of local amenities and the well renowned gastro pub. The nearby village of Bucklebury offers a good selection of day-to-day independent
shopping, while Newbury and Reading provide a more comprehensive range of amenities including shops, restaurants, theatres and sporting facilities.
There is a variety of recreational pursuits available in the area and the surrounding countryside is
renowned for walking, cycling and riding. Communications links are excellent, with easy access to the M4 and a local station offering regular trains to central London in around an hour.

The gardens and grounds at Midgham House are beautifully tended and a superb approach and backdrop to the house. The park was originally the centre of a considerable estate and the tree
lined drive, owned by Midgham House, also provides access to some other houses within the park. The land lies predominantly to the east
of the drive and amounts to over 80 acres in total, about 60 acres of pasture parkland. This parkland is dotted with beautiful mature trees. There is a footpath which crosses the park. Within the formal gardens there are areas of specific interest. At the top of the drive, before reaching the house, is an attractive orchard area which culminates in a sweeping entrance which was originally the entrance to the former Palladian house. There are some historic ruins on arrival here which are reminiscent of former years. The drive then sweeps up to Midgham House itself. The focus of the gardens is the historic pleasure lake with its
distinctive Chippendale style gazebo. There is a pathway around the lake providing a lovely walk
around the grounds. There are beautiful mature specimen trees and in season rhododendron and
azaleas punctuate the margins of the lake. There are long sweeping lawns down to the lake which are managed as wild flower meadows which have paths cut amongst the flowering mead. There is an
open air swimming pool and a charming yew hedge enclosed tea garden area which may have also served in the past as a grass tennis court. The grounds also benefit from a Victorian style greenhouse, extensive stabling and garaging.
At the bottom of the park there is an agricultural barn and modern steel framed barn which are currently used for storage. These barns are
accessed by a track across the park.
