The Building

Forgebank has won multiple awards including the Passivhaus Trust, the Murray Armour Award, The Observer Ethical Award, the UK Community Energy Award; it has also received a Level 6 Code for Sustainable Homes.

The Tour

Entry leads directly into a contemporary kitchen which has distinct yellow cabinetry designed by local carpenters at Out of the Woods and worktops made from Kirkby blue/black slate, sourced from Burlington Quarry. The kitchen in turn flows into a beautifully lit open plan living and dining area, with a glass door opening onto a rear terrace.

Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a good-sized family bathroom. The main bedroom has been fitted with Vitsœ shelving which runs perpendicularly across the room. There is access from here onto a private balcony, which enjoys beautiful views of the river beyond. The bathroom is sleek and minimal in design, painted with accents of muted grey, in keeping with the home’s contemporary aesthetic. Across the hall is a second double bedroom with additional Vitsœ shelving.

Forgebank offers many community facilities including workshops, offices and studios. There is a Common House for meeting and dining with other residents. The Mill, a nearby co-working space, also offers preferential rates to inhabitants of the community. There is a guest room for residents’ guests to stay in and a shared laundry room. Residents can also rent from a bank of six electric cars on site. The house has access to high-speed fibre-optic broadband supplied by local not-for-profit community society, B4RN.

Outside space

The large rear patio sits adjacent to the River Lune and there are further spectacular views from the large balcony, which runs the length of the first-floor bedroom. The building is surrounded by six acres of undeveloped land owned by the Lancaster Cohousing group, with plans for extensive planting.

The Area

The village of Halton is located in the Lune Valley, in Lancashire, and has excellent access to outdoor activities, with multiple extensive walking and cycling routes nearby.
