This house was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the American artist George Plank, known for his Vogue magazine covers, who lived here for the rest of his life. Lutyens is one of our most famous architects, known for imaginatively adapting traditional architectural styles to the requirements of his era (1869-1944) and in the process giving us some of our most beautiful country houses, public buildings and war memorials.
This house is one of Lutyens’ smaller houses; built in 1926-7, in the Georgian manner, positioned on high ground and with wonderful open westerly views to the rear.
In the twentieth century an L-shaped extension was added, faced with white weatherboarding. More recently, Stephen Langer, the well known local architect has succeeded in obtaining planning permission to build a new integral double garage in a more sympathetic style, with accommodation over.
The house has a wonderful style throughout, with comfortable rooms nearly all enjoying the rear view and including a fine conservatory with a panoramic outlook.
Most people will feel that overall the house would now benefit from some skillful general up-dating works to create a more contemporary interior for this historic home.
