Farnham is the largest town within the borough of Waverley, with smaller villages of Runfold, Frensham and Wrecclesham within close proximity. Farnham falls within Surrey, with Badshot Lea and Weybourne on the Aldershot side of the town.

It is a town of significant historic interest with many Georgian houses and old buildings, including Farnham Castle, The Maltings and nearby Waverley Abbey. It is located midway between Winchester and London, reportedly the reason for the position of its castle, which was built as a stopover for the Bishop of Winchester en route to London back in the 11th Century.

The main thoroughfare running from West Street, through the Borough and on to East Street is home to many shops and independent retailers, amongst them Elphicks and Pullingers, some of the town’s oldest surviving businesses. Farnham also offers a vast selection of restaurants, cafes and bars. As a market town it continues with tradition and has a monthly farmers market held in the Central Car Park and a variety of arts and craft markets at the Maltings. The town also offers a Waitrose and central Sainsburys, plus a larger Sainsburys superstore on the outskirts.

Currently under investment, the town centre will soon by expanded by ‘Brightwells Yard’; a new development and shopping centre which will include a Reel Cinema and Marks and Spencer. The phased opening is scheduled from 2021 and will include a new town square.

Farnham has a strong association with the arts and is home to the University of the Creative Arts, formerly known as Farnham School of Art as far back as 1866. It is also known for its outstanding schools, both state and independent, in particular South Farnham School, Heath End, All Hallows, Weydon Secondary School, Frensham Heights, Edgeborough School, Barfield School and Farnham Sixth Form College.

Within walking distance of the town centre there are several parks, Farnham Park making up the grounds of the Castle and Gostrey Meadows, with sports facilities and playgrounds making them a popular choice with runners, families and dog walkers. Farnham also benefits from the nearby Frensham Ponds, Bourne Woods and Alice Holt forest. For other keen sports enthusiasts there is a central Leisure centre and recently developed David Lloyd gym situated on the outskirts of the town, next to Farnham Rugby Club, the first club of England World Cup Winner, Jonny Wilkinson.

It’s fantastic road and rail networks made Farnham an early example of a commuter town, allowing life in the countryside while remaining accessible to London. With rail links to London Waterloo in under an hour and access to the M3, M25 and A325, also known as the Blackwater Valley road, Farnham remains a popular choice with commuters and families.
