Description

Brimpton House was built by a local gentleman farmer named George Arundel in around c1812. His son Joseph later extended it in 1836, as the plaque bearing his initials to the south wall testifies. Many of the original features remain intact down to the door fittings, shutters and windows, and the current owners have taken tremendous care in their improvements to preserve the character and charm of the house. Built in the warm red brick of the era, the house is classically proportioned, with Doric columns supporting the pediment over the front door and the original full length sash windows on the ground floor, the forerunners of today's French windows.

Inside, the rooms are of classic Georgian proportions with high ceilings and large windows. At the front of the house is a morning room and dining room, and beyond is the larger, more formal drawing room which looks out over the lawn and towards the church. At the back of the house, the original domestic rooms are now conveniently arranged for modern daily life, and the current owners have added a traditional Georgian Orangery, which blends in perfectly with the rest of the house, and provides an extra games room/summer room, next to the kitchen. There is also a west facing York stone terrace making a perfect place for drinks or dinner on a summer evening.

A graceful staircase leads up from the front hall to the high ceilinged first floor, with six bedrooms, all of a generous size with lovely views. A further bedroom is on the second floor, accessed by a secondary staircase, and there is plenty of roof space beyond for further accommodation, subject to planning.

Gardens and Grounds

The house sits in just over 4 acres of beautifully maintained gardens and grounds. The south side of the house is covered with Wisteria in late spring, roses in the summer, and edged with a York stone terrace and lawns with views to the village church. The herbaceous borders are filled with mature plants, and the garden is full of colour from the spring daffodils until the early autumn roses. There is an orchard of fruit trees, from which the current owners produce apple juice, and to the west of the house are further lawns, swimming pool, tennis court, stables and paddocks.

The Coach House & Dovecote

This long building at right angles to the house is part garage, part store rooms downstairs, with plenty of space for vehicles, garden tools, garden furniture etc. The first floor is accessed via a separate entrance, and currently provides an office/recording studio.

Church Cottage
This charming brick built cottage has a dining/living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and bathroom. It is accessed by a secondary drive next to the church, and has a small lawned garden at the front, and roses over the door.

The Barn and Swimming Pool
This magnificent barn currently forms the north wall of the swimming pool, and is unmodernised. Subject to planning, there is development opportunity for a games room/gym/ pool house. The swimming pool is set within a walled courtyard and has a loggia along the barn elevation covered with a vine.
