A little history of The Wakes…

The context for the design of The Wakes when compared with contemporary dwellings demonstrates Townsend's advanced thinking within Edwardian architecture and arguably the pioneering layout for the modern home. The English upper /middle classes were escaping to the country and the reliance of servants.

The Wakes, further incorporates a number of Townsend's design features such as the wide tile arch with splayed reveals to the curved timber entrance door, deep overhanging eaves and buttressing. The current and new front entrance has been carefully replicated by the current owners to copy the old front door, which is now at the back of the house down to the swimming pool. This self-functioning home also broke down the boundaries between the house and the garden. Finely crafted paths with lavender borders and trellis work divide and carry on the architectural lines of the house into the garden setting.
