Location

The village stands on high ground bordering Romney Marsh. A belt of woodland divides the parish into Lower and Upper Ruckinge with the Royal Military Canal running through the lower part of the parish. The church is Norman and early English and the register dates back to 1549. The old school is now used as the village hall and the Blue Anchor pub, which had close association with gangs of local smugglers, dates back to 1765. The nearest Primary School is now Hamstreet Primary which is about a 12 minute drive away towards Ashford. The village of Ruckinge lies seven miles southeast of Ashford on the B2067 Hamstreet to Hythe road. It is the centre of a civil parish of the same name, which also includes the scattered community of Bromley Green. The population of the parish is around 727 persons, and is divided in two (Upper and Lower) by a belt of woodland. The Royal Military Canal runs to the south of Ruckinge. Ruckinge's history includes smuggling, once rife on Romney Marsh and it is rumoured that the notorious Ransley brothers were buried in Ruckinge churchyard after being hanged at Penenden Heath, Maidstone. Until the early 1990s Ruckinge had a village shop/post office. Today the nearest shops and railway station are in nearby Hamstreet. Ruckinge does have lively Scout and Guide associations which it shares with the larger village. Locally, Ham Street Station is a mere 12 minute car journey taking you to Ashford International in under 10 minutes and onto London St Pancras in just 38 minutes. HamStreet Primary boasts good Ofsted reports and there are local pubs and churches nearby. The Royal Military Canal runs through Ruckinge all the way to the coastal town of Hythe and is a lovely dog walking route or alternatively, 2 minutes walk down the road and you can take the family for a walk in the woods.
