History
Clayes Farm, historically Clays or Clay’s, is in the parish of West Chiltington being on its northern fringe in an area that traditionally has been cultivated for arable farming. The Wealden Buildings Study Group visited the property in 1986 and concluded the original building was probably built in the 16th century being a two-storey timber framed building consisting of four bays with a one storey outhouse to the rear with a catslide roof. At some point, likely in the 18th century, the wall panels
were filled in with brick and the front rebuilt and covered with hanging tiles. In 1895 sale particulars of Clayes Farm describe the site as having 57 acres of arable and meadow land including a productive orchard. The sale comprised an “old fashioned” farmhouse and homestead made up of stabling, cow house, piggeries, stores and stock yard with some of these buildings possibly being physically linked to the farmhouse. Today the group of buildings has changed considerably with the farmhouse Clayes Farm the group of buildings has changed considerably with the farmhouse now being L-shaped and the buildings around the Homestead either much reduced or demolished and replaced. A former dairy building is likely to have been built after 1911 and converted to residential ancillary accommodation around 1995. The large Dutch Barn is likely to be post war and today offers potential for a variety of uses with plans drawn up by the current owners to restyle it as a games area or “party barn”.
