Location

Whalsay is connected to mainland Shetland by a regular ro-ro ferry service which runs from the Symbister ferry terminal to Laxo / Vidlin. ‘Seaview’ is situated in Skaw immediately next to the golf course which is in the North end of Whalsay and just under two miles from the ferry terminal at Symbister, the main settlement on the island and the location of all the main amenities. Situated off the east coast of mainland Shetland, Whalsay, which measures around 5 miles long by 2 miles wide and has a population of around 1,000, is often referred to as ‘the Bonnie Isle’.

The island has some magnificent scenery and the Ward of Clett, the highest point provides superb views of the east coast of Shetland. A 30 minute ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day to Laxo / Vidlin, about 20 miles from Lerwick, links the island with mainland Shetland. Although offering a quieter outer isles location, the island has an excellent range of amenities which are centred around Symbister and include a school, two general stores and a post office, a doctor’s surgery and care centre.

Whalsay is best known for it’s friendly people and their involvement in the fishing industry. Symbister houses a marina and a boating club and is home to several of Scotland’s biggest fishing boats.
