Description

14 Hepburn Gardens is a lovely family home as well as being a property of considerable architectural interest.

The house was designed and built in 1906 by Gillespie & Scott, renowned Fife architects. This was the first in a row of six Edwardian semi-detached houses which reflected Arts & Crafts styling, and began to incorporate the design ideas of Charles Rennie MacIntosh. The row of six houses were referred to locally as "Tartan Terrace" because of the use of red brick foundations, white harling and green Welsh slate on the roof – this is in contrast to the traditional sandstone finish used elsewhere throughout St Andrews.

Gillespie himself was the first owner of No. 14, and in many ways this allowed him to bring more elaborate versions of Rennie MacIntosh style with each successive build going up the street. No. 14 is relatively simple in its decoration, in terms of cornice and woodwork design, and many of the original features which had been covered up were revealed and refurbished by the current owners in 1988. This work was overseen by the Jack Fisher Partnership, whose partner Murray Jack was then the Chief Architect of Historic Scotland. Copies of the original design drawings, approved by the Town Council, and the designs implemented in 1988, are available to see.

Sympathetic additions built in 1988 include a wide double garage in Arts & Crafts style and an elevated broad terrace at the south overlooking Cockshaugh Park.
