House For Sale £2,100,000
Manston, Sturminster Newton, Dorset DT10

Description
A sympathetically and beautifully renovated 1930s house of over 5000 sq ft commanding wonderful far-reaching views to the south with formal and parkland gardens, fields and woodland. In all about 8 acres.

Buckley House was built in 1930 for Lieutenant Colonel Claude Edward Syndercombe Bower of the Bower family associated with Fontmell Parva. He acquired the plot on which was a Georgian farmhouse known as Godwins and had Buckley House built although at the time it was named Buckley Hayes. The development included a gardener's cottage, Buckley Lodge next door, which was sold in the 1970s. A Victorian oak framed barn and brick built pumping house from the 1880s remain of the original site.

The house included servant's accommodation that was demolished in the 1980s and the gardens were designed by Brenda Colvin a renowned Landscape Architect responsible for the design of many gardens of stately homes and palaces. Many of the original elements of her design remain such as the sunken rose garden, terracing, yew tree hedging and kitchen garden. The tennis court was originally grass, now a modern surface but now needs re-surfacing.

The house has been painstakingly and sympathetically renovated by the current owners reinstating features of the era with the practicality and technology for today's living. Spaces have been modified to create open plan living that flow and connect seamlessly whilst offering areas of privacy and seclusion that capitalise on the outstanding views over the parkland gardens and beyond to Hambledon, Okeford and Bulbarrow Hills.

The renovation has been overseen by our Architect client who has worked closely with several highly skilled tradesmen. The attention to detail throughout is of the highest order with particular focus on the bespoke joinery details. Top quality fittings and finishes have been used throughout including fabric insulation upgrades and installation of smart features that control heating, mood lighting and detection systems commensurate with a house of this stature.

Internally the accommodation measures approximately 5000 sq ft. There is an Edwardian style veranda and Green Oak porch with the original front door opening into an entrance lobby off which is an open plan boot and cloaks room with original flagstone vestibule. The inner hall has lovely panelling and a nook area with feature bespoke dummy fireplace and joinery cabinets. The principal reception rooms are to the rear and south facing with high ceilings, cornices, panelling and the drawing room having an open fire in Portland Stone fireplace. Double doors open into a library or snug and with the doors opened creates a fantastic entertaining space. The kitchen is a stunning family space with bespoke timber wall and floor units, integrated pantry, Rangemaster double oven and induction hob, Fisher and Paykel appliances and Carrera marble quartz worktops. French doors to the south open to the terrace and there are fine views over the garden and hills beyond. The kitchen flows into an open plan dining area with views over the garden to the side and there is a snug with Charnwood wood burning stove. Double doors from the kitchen open into a dining / club room which will be completed with the same care and attention to detail. The utility and laundry room has an extensive housekeeper's cupboard and there is a ground floor cloakroom and two plant rooms. The former garage has been converted to a home gym with flexible flooring and high-spec lighting. The stairs rise from the hall to a spacious first floor landing where there are six double bedrooms. The master bedroom is dual aspect with a range of bespoke fitted wardrobes and stunning views. The ensuite bathroom is sumptuous with a free standing Albion Tubby bath and wet room. Two further bedrooms each have ensuite wet rooms and there are three additional bedrooms, family bathroom and guest wc. All bathrooms are superbly finished with parquet flooring, marble tiles and Burlington traditional sanitaryware. The floors are a combination of original oak strip, engineered oak, wood block flooring, Sisal herringbone natural floor coverings and reclaimed terracotta herringbone flooring in the utility space. The interior is finished with William Morris traditional wall coverings and Farrow & Ball Little Greene paint. There is tremendous scope to further extend the house from the dining area / family space to the east with an Orangery to bring the outside in and further capitalise on the views.
