History
The current main building was built approx. 1390, one of the oldest stone buildings in Berkeley after the Castle. Built by the Berkeley Castle estate - using the Norman town planning format. Many additions have been made to the property since originally being built with many different styles, Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian.
Before the current ownership Perrots House was an antique shop, before that a general store and before that it was a butchers’ shop for approx 150 years run by the King family. Sadly this is as far as the records show.
The name of ‘Perrot’ is an acknowledgement to Sir John Perrot who was the son of Mary Berkeley- Lady in waiting(from Berkeley Castle family to Catherine Of Argon (Henry VIIIs’ first wife) and is noted/or not as an illegitimate son of Henry VIII. He is a figure of unusual power and influence in Tudor Britain and Ireland. This name was added in 2008 when a descendant of the Perrot family took ownership of the property.
Sir John Perrot served as Lord Deputy to Queen Elizabeth I of England during the Tudor conquest of Ireland. He was convicted of treason, but was not put to death in the Tower of London as Queen Elizabeth 1 refused to sign his death warrant. He still died and was buried in the Tower of London. The Perrot family estate was in Southern Wales – Carfew/Roche/Laugharne Castles. After the conviction of treason of Sir John his estate went back to the crown . After approx. 3 years after Sir Johns' death, the Crown gave back a reduced estate to the Perrot family (Roche Castle reputedly). Laugharne Castles’ other famous guest was Dylan Thomas who wrote from a room in the ruins of the castle.

Berkeley is situated to the west of the M5 and the A38, to the north of Bristol and to the south of Gloucester and Cheltenham. Berkeley Castle has been home to the Berkeley family for some 900 years, a popular and very interesting historical attraction. The town was also the home of Edward Jenner, pioneer of vaccination. The Jenner Museum is a short walk from the High Street, past the brick cottage that Jenner gave to James Phipps, who as a boy was the first person to receive inoculation. A thriving small rural town, Berkeley has a variety of shops, building society, hotel, public houses and a primary school
