Interesting History Supplied By The Owner

The house, which is late Georgian, has a very interesting history. It was built as a pub, called the Dog and Duck, and was one of notoriously ill repute.

Interestingly, in the 1840s, the spire of StJames’s, a stones throw away, was struck by lightning and a local artist, William Brown, took advantage of the scaffolding and painted what is called The Louth Panorama. The pub, my house, can be seen in the painting complete with the pub sign!

The house apparently has tunnels to St James Church and i’m very keen to find the opening. It’s a Grade 2 listed building.

There is a cellar too the story is that after it was a pub, the house belonged to the local hangman who used to store unclaimed bodies in the cellar prior to offloading them to anatomists!

The Church, St James, which is virtually in touching distance of the house, is the Church where the Lincolnshire Rising started in 1536. The vicar, for his involvement was hung, drawn and quartered in 1537. Lincolnshire presented such problems to the then King, Henry VIII, that he famously declared Lincolnshire to be the “most brute and beastly shite of the whole realm” . You are also able to see the family of peregrine falcons that live on the church.
