Property History

The house was commissioned by Dr John Hankinson Gornall and completed in 1886. Originally from the Preston area, he named the house Ribblesdale.
Dr John Gornall was appointed surgeon to the Old Dispensary (predecessor of the Infirmary) in 1865 and was also a Justice of the Peace for the borough. He was appointed Medical Officer of Health for Warrington in 1874.
His son Dr John Guest Gornall succeeded his father as Medical Officer in 1892.
His son, Dr Richard Guest Gornall carried on the family tradition in 1935 when he was appointed a consultant physician. He was well respected for his work to eradicate Tuberculosis in Warrington by highlighting the insanitary conditions of people living in slums.
In the 1930s Dr Richard Guest Gornall turned the family home into a maternity home which he ran for almost 20 years. He took great pride in the garden which he opened to the public once a year.
The house was then sold and became a hotel until the current owners bought it in 2001. The name had been changed to Balmoral House by the previous owners.
