Description

Whitwell House is originally Queen Anne and was re-modelled and re-faced in 1727 and is now encapsulated as a fine example of a Georgian townhouse. The main elevation stands behind a pretty front garden with wrought iron gate and railings to the street. This elevation is typical of this era with symmetrical sash windows plaster quoins at the corners and bands between each floor with a parapet concealing the roof above.

A lattice work porch and glazed panelled entrance door lead into a wide stone flagged hallway with a fine staircase to one side and three sets of paired columns. The hall runs from front to back where a set of French doors leads out into the garden. The house has beautiful proportions typical of the Georgian period with some features dating from later times. To the right of the hall is a panelled study with brick open fireplace and redecorated cloakroom beyond. The dining room on the left of the hallway has warm oak panelling with a wide recessed fireplace featuring an art deco grate with copper hood. To the rear is the main drawing room which has a deep glazed bay with French doors leading into the garden a recessed fireplace with arches to either side, a part glazed china display cabinet and wood burning stove set into a Delft tiled fireplace with panelled surround. A modern kitchen requiring updating together with rear hall complete the ground floor accommodation.

The staircase with turned balusters and hardwood scalloped handrail passes a fine arched headed Georgian window and leads up to the first floor which features deep dentilled cornicing and moulded plaster ceiling detailing. There are three large bedrooms on this floor, the principle bedroom has an en suite bathroom and there is a family bathroom in addition together with a laundry room, the second staircase and a room which has been used as a studio but would function well as an office from home or study. On the top floor there are three further bedrooms which have been redecorated, two to the front with views towards the centre of the town and a third with a wide window to one end. There is also a large store room together with a room which may offer potential for installing an additional bathroom (subject to any necessary consents). The accommodation is shown in greater detail in the attached floor plans.

Outside
To the front there is a small lawned garden with shrubs and climbing plants enclosed within brick walling and wrought iron railings. The rear garden is protected by tall brick walling, completely private and enclosed laid to lawn in the centre and with a paved terrace adjacent to the rear elevation of the house a number of mature trees including a cedar. There is pedestrian access to the side street and access to the single garage. There are two private parking spaces in Ferrars Court which are available by separate negotiation.
