The site is located just off Ramsden Wood Road, in Walsden, adjacent to Ramsden Clough. It is easy to miss the turning, which is just after Number 64 on the right. This is a delightful setting, nestling into the wooded hillside with plenty of countryside walks in the vicinity. Despite the semi-rural aspect, the location is handy for local amenities in Walsden village. Gordon Riggs Garden centre is within easy reach, and has a farm shop, cafes and mill shop. There are two local pubs and Walsden Cricket & Bowling club is within 0.2 miles. The local station at Walsden is within approximately 0.5 miles and there is a regular bus service from the main A6033, Rochdale Road, into Todmorden centre, approximately 2.2 miles away. Todmorden station is within approximately 2.2 miles and Littleborough station 4.5 miles.

Site History

This is the former Strines Mill site, dating back to the early 1800's and most likely earlier. The former cotton mill was powered by a water mill, from Ramsden Clough. Over the years the old stone mill fell into disrepair and later became a Tripe Factory which closed some 35/40 years ago. The site has been mostly cleared, some hardstanding and rubble remains and the base of the old brick chimney can be seen in the woodland behind where the former mill once stood.
We have obtained an old photo from Pennine Horizons digital archive, showing the former mill buildings circa 1980's before they were demolished.

Planning History

Outline Planning 06/00408/out was obtained in 2006, for three detached dwellings.
Full Planning was obtained in 2008 08/01860/ful for "Demolition of existing mill, constructions of five dwellings and construction of new access bridge"
The five dwellings were to comprise of three town houses and 2 detached homes.
These plans were renewd in 2012 - 11/01519/ren.
