Baldwins Hill, Loughton, Essex IG10

Description
A fascinating Art Deco house designed and built in the early 1930's. This stunning house sits within the Baldwins Hill Conservation area and is perfectly positioned for Epping Forest.

Location

Baldwins Hill is located in the highest part of Loughton and lies along the crest of a ridge that rises gently north from York Hill. Epping Forest can be found immediately to the west of Baldwins.

During the Victorian period, Loughton had become a fashionable middle class address for prominent artistic and scientific members of society. New residents were attracted by its close proximity to both Epping Forest and London. A thread that continues to the present day.

The town centre is only 0.7 of a mile away making the house superbly situated for everyday conveniences and shopping. Amenities include independent boutiques and beauty salons, restaurants and bars, supermarkets and coffee shops. Marks and Spencer, The Ginger Pig butchers and Gail's bakery are a few of the 'go to' haunts.

Commuters are well served by the tube (1.4 of a mile) station in Loughton (Central Line) and motorists by the close proximity of the M25 and M11.

For the outdoor types Epping Forest offers a vast area to exercise the dog, the Saturday morning run, or to catch up with family and friends at the Foresters pub or one of the delightful tea huts.

Description

Monkwood is an outstanding example of an art deco house designed and built in the 1930's. During the 30's a new variety of Art Deco architecture became common; it was called Streamline Moderne or simply Streamline, or, in France, the Style Paqueboat, or Ocean Liner style. Buildings in the style had rounded corners and long horizontal lines; they were almost always white; and they sometimes had nautical features, such as railings that resembled those on a ship. Many of these striking characteristics can be seen in Monkwood.

The accommodation comprises a very good sized entrance hallway which could also be used as an office space, WC, a lovely living room with large curved windows, utility room with integral garage access and of particular note, the spectacular and extended kitchen dining room. This stunning space features an central island and breakfast bar, integrated appliances and a contemporary fitted kitchen with granite work surfaces and floors. Two aspects of the space include custom made Crittle style stacking doors which allow for a completely open aperture on both aspects. Natural light pours in through two ceiling lanterns.

Upstairs are four bright bedrooms and a family bathroom. Bedrooms one and two benefit from en suites and fitted storage.

Exterior

The property is accessed via a fob operated retracting vehicle gate and secure pedestrian gate. There is ample parking to the front, a very useful garage and side access to the rear.

To the rear is a large decked patio and seating area, perfect for those al fresco occasions. The garden is a great size and very functional for those with young children owing the artificial grass which offers versatile use in all weathers. To the foot of the garden is a detached studio which provides a very valuable flexible space.

Square Footage: 1983 sq ft
