The Property

This lovely period home was built in the late 14th century as a timber framed small aisled hall with a cross wing at the south west end, this wing still survives today. Later extensions and additions have been made since including a significant extension in around 1564. This date is evidenced by carving in the exposed dragon post on the north-east corner of the house. This addition was commissioned by William Bendelowes, serjeant-at law to Queen Elizabeth I and a generous local benefactor. A coat of arms combining those of Bendelowes and his wife, Eleanor, can be seen in the window looking down Dunmow Road towards the village centre. It is likely that the oak panelling in the east facing rooms is also from the Tudor period.

The Setting

The property is well placed in the centre of Great Bardfield, a vibrant village with two pubs, a coffee shop, primary school, co-op, hairdresser, bookshop and butcher as well as numerous active and welcoming societies and clubs. The village is conveniently situated for travel to London, Cambridge, Colchester or Chelmsford as well as being within easy reach of Stansted Airport.

Accommodation

A spacious entrance hallway leads off to four impressive reception rooms, all with great character. In addition to the main reception rooms there is a study, cloakroom, pantry, boot room and a spacious and light kitchen/dining/family room with bi-fold doors and views across the gardens.
There are five bedrooms on the first floor with one accessed via a separate staircase, an en-suite bath/shower room and a further shower room. There is feature Oak panelling in some of the bedrooms.
Agents note: Planning for swimming pool and cottage has previously been granted

Outside

Extensive parking and a double cart lodge sit behind an oak remote-controlled gate. The house opens onto four generous tiers of terrace, ideal for entertaining and enjoying the private, South facing garden. The formal gardens, which slope downwards away from the house, are principally laid to lawn. Beyond the lawn area stands a range of mature trees, including an orchard. The garden is bordered to the West by a high flint wall and pretty brook along which winds a path to explore. There is a secluded cob-nut walk that is carpeted in snowdrops each Spring. An established kitchen garden with raised beds provides fruit and vegetables year-round. In addition, there is a one bedroom detached annexe with a sitting room, garden room, double bedroom and en-suite shower room.
