S5 Area Guide
Firth Park, Fir Vale, Longley, Norwood, Parson Cross, Sheffield Lane Top, Shirecliffe, Shiregreen, Southey Green

The S5 postcode covers a northern section of Sheffield stretching from Park Springs, east towards Fir Vale and west towards Shirecliffe. At its more northerly point you reach the outskirts of Shiregreen and head towards Ecclesfield and Chapeltown.

As one of the least affluent areas of Sheffield, it is a perfect place for people trying to get onto the property ladder or for those looking for an investment opportunity. The majority of the houses here are semi-detached and terraced which reflects the high number of families located in this area. With Northern General Hospital being within the S5 boundary, local housing is popular with students who may be placed there, as it is the largest teaching hospital in the county.

Firth Park lies in the east of S5 and benefits from being on a major cross city public transport route and has a shopping centre with over 40 independent shops as well as High Street banks and building societies, national supermarket chains and well-known chemists.

Significant city council regeneration of private properties in the south of Firth Park in 2005 has helped both the quality of housing and the respective house prices. The area is now one of the more popular residential districts on the north side of the city and has a friendly, community feel about the place.

There are numerous parks in the S5 area: Firth Park, Longley Park, Colley Park, Concord Park, Busk Meadow Park, Parkwood Springs and Cookson Park.

Firth Park covers a total area of 16 hectares and consists of park landscape and registered ancient woodland. It is a Green Flag Award winning site, and features include a Grade II listed clock tower, playground, sports facilities, and cafe.

Longley Park covers an area of just under 52 acres and is the third largest public park in Sheffield. The park has a rolling landscape with hills and valleys and there are numerous copses of old trees. Facilities include play areas for toddlers and older children, two bowling greens, a basketball court, one full size football pitch and two 5-a -side pitches. There are also seating and picnic areas.

Parkwood Springs is an amazing natural 'wild' space where you can find woodland, heath and open parkland. There are spectacular views over the city centre, the suburbs and the distant moors of the Peak District. Facilities on offer include a mountain bike trail - providing challenges for a wide range of skill levels, and used for one of the 'Nutcracker' races. There's also a sports ground with open football pitches and a playing field. The Sheffield City Council land is largely designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest and the site also contains two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (sssi's), of geologically important stone types.

Cookson skatepark was opened in 2006 and is probably one of the best outdoor skateparks in Sheffield. An all concrete mainly bowl focused park it is aimed more at BMXers but there is still a lot for skaters to do here.

S5 has five popular allotment sites available: Brushes Allotments, High Wincobank Allotments, Norwood Allotments and Shirecliffe Allotments.

If you prefer to carry out your exercise away from the elements, then luckily In Shiregreen you can find Concord Sports Centre which offers a range of indoor and outdoor facilities including a gym, spa, multi-use sports hall, bowls hall, outdoor football pitches, two swimming pools and children's activities.

In regards to eating out the offerings in S5 are not as diverse as other parts of Sheffield. There are plenty of takeaways to choose from including fish and chips, chinese, indian, kebabs and pizza. If you fancy heading out for a sit down meal then The Devonshire Arms offers traditional pub food and also shows popular sports events on the big screen, perfect if you fancy a pint and a burger whilst watching the match. Eight Foot Way is another pub and restaurant serving traditional pub grub but also boasts a pizza oven. Pitching itself as a family friendly establishment it's a perfect place to bring the little ones.

If you fancy more adventurous cuisine, then to the east of S5, Meadowhall Shopping Centre is only a short distance away. The Oasis Food Court there boasts lots of popular chain restaurants. To the west is Hillsborough and it's busy shopping centre and restaurants, meaning you don't have far to go if traditional pub grub is not your thing.

As mentioned previously, due to the properties in S5 being more affordable than other areas of Sheffield, it has become increasingly popular with growing families. There are a large choice of nurseries and schools within the S5 boundary.
