The Story
St Mary’s Church of England School in Church Lane, North Ockendon was built by subscription in 1842 on land owned by Richard Benyon de Beauvoir, Lord of the Manor. By 1846-7 the school had 55 pupils. It received government grants from 1871 and was enlarged in 1869 and 1881. In 1902 it was rebuilt by the Benyon family to accommodate 80 children. In 1936 the school was re-organised for mixed juniors and infants. On 22nd January 1944 at 5am a V2 bomb exploded outside St Mary Magdalene Church (which had been protected with straw) causing all the windows in the school to shatter. In 1947 when there were only 30 pupils the county council suggested it was closed. It remained open and in 1955 was granted Aided status and it finally closed its doors in 1980. In 2001/2 the school and accompanying accommodation was sold and developed by pip Electrics into residential properties and this is when it came into the present owners’ ownership.
