Dunstan Houses, Stepney Green, London E1

Description
This one-bedroom apartment is situated on the third floor of Dunstan Houses, a handsome red-brick mansion block on Stepney Green Road in east London. There are expansive views of the London skyline from the south-westerly rear aspect and a large communal courtyard garden for residents. A wide variety of excellent bars, cafes, restaurants are in the locality.

The Building

Built by the East End Dwellings Company Ltd in 1899, Dunstan Houses was constructed as part of the philanthropic movement to improve living conditions for the working classes. Its imposing late-Victorian façade stretches north from a domed tower section at Cressy Place.

The Tour

Dunstan Houses runs parallel and directly opposite to the green space of Stepney Green Gardens. The handsome red-brick frontage is interspersed by open stairwells with decorative wrought-iron balconies set between towered sections.

The third-floor apartment is accessed off a communal lobby, which leads into an internal hall where stone floor tiles extend underfoot. The apartment lies in an excellent position at the rear of the block, so has expansive views southwest across the dramatic London skyline through its Georgian-style sash window.

The living room lies at the front of the plan and has original floorboards and white walls, with open bookshelves across one wall. The adjacent kitchen has space for a dining table and is grounded by a utilitarian linoleum floor in grey. Integrated appliances sit below a white Formica worktop with exposed ply edging, and an integrated gas hob has geometric patterned tiles as a splashback in shades of blue and white. A window above the stainless steel sink casts light across the space, and a row of high-level obscured glazing above the door borrows light from the internal hall.

The double bedroom occupies the rear of the plan. The space is grounded by soft grey carpets, light grey walls maximise the natural light welcomed in through the southwest facing window. The bathroom has stone floor tiles, with walls in a combination of tiles and painted plaster.

Outdoor Space

There is a large communal courtyard to the rear with plenty of space for alfresco dining. Many of east London’s finest parks are within walking distance, including Mile End Park, Bethnal Green Gardens, Weaver’s Fields and Victoria Park.

The Area

The neighbourhood is home to a thriving range of traditional pubs, cafes and restaurants. Institutions like E Pellicci and The Approach Tavern have been joined by a new wave of bars and restaurants including Brawn, The Allotment Kitchen, Redchurch Brewery and Sager + Wilde on Paradise Row. The V&A Museum of Childhood is very close by, as is York Hall leisure centre and the independent Genesis Cinema. Also nearby are the Regents’ Canal, Columbia Road Flower Market, Brick Lane and Shoreditch.

Stepney Green Underground station (Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines) is a three-minute walk east along Mile End Road, and Bethnal Green Underground station (Central Line) is a 10-minute walk north. Nearby Whitechapel is on the Overground, running between Clapham Junction and Highbury & Islington.
