General information and approach The Tontine is an impressive Georgian building overlooking the River Severn. Built around 1772 for the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Company. The Tontine would have been such an elegant building in its heyday. With 100 bedrooms for paying guests as well as a ballroom. The Directors, Committee and principal shareholders would conduct their business here before enjoying lavish banquets and the finest alcohol bought up the river from Bristol. No money was spared at the time however this was short lived as the railway arrived in 1862 and the river and canal trade declined! By 1880, the hotel was broken up into dwellings and the once impressive inn was now of little importance.

The property has had several names changes over its history. The Stourport Inn, the Areley Inn and The Tontine Hotel by which it is still known today.

The Wolverhampton and Dudley brewery whom owned it in 1977 submitted plans to demolish the Tontine for redevelopment as only a small proportion of the building remained open as a pub. It stood empty and unloved. However the plans were rejected. The external façade of the building was not be be changed as it gained Grade ll listed status.

The Tontine finally closed as a pub in 2001 when it was sold to a developer with plans to convert this historic building. It remained boarded up until purchased by British Waterways.
