History of Rockwood House

Originally known as Yate House until the early 1990s, this historic Grade II listed Georgian house was once a stately home with large estate. It is the former home of the prominent Bristol Fox family who lived there until it was sold in 1945.

The 1945 sales catalogue described it as ‘A compact small residential estate comprising a delightfully situated Georgian residence, stabling, garage, two picturesque lodges and enclosure of park land and pasture in all about 41.5 Acres together with the Bed of Valuable Carboniferous Limestone lying thereunder’.

It goes on…
‘The Estate comprises a Georgian Residence built of stone (part covered with climbing shrubs and having parapet and slated roof. It is approached by a drive fringed with well-timbered shrubberies.’

The catalogue described its ‘glazed porch with bevelled pillars, heavy mahogany door into Hall with flagged stones…’. The ground floor included a Drawing Room with oak floor and mahogany doors, a Dining Room, a Morning Room etc. It also had a fine Library boasting an impressive collection of fine art and antiquarian books.

During the early 1900s, the Fox family, originally from Brislington in Bristol, kept Jersey cows as gentlemen farmers to provide their own milk supply. A lawn tennis court once stood at front of house in the gardens.

One of the former residents, Francis Frederick Fox (1833-1915), was a petroleum importer based in Bristol. He was once High Sheriff of Bristol (1880-1881).

Frances Janet Fox kept horses within the grounds (pictured in 1902).

Richard Fox was Justice of the Peace in Bristol c1920s. He was also a keen rider of hounds with the Duke’s [at Badminton]; and the Government hay-buyer during the war. He was a typical country gentleman, a keen motorist and regularly played golf at Stinchcombe Hill and in Ireland.

It was converted into apartments during the late 1980s/early 1990s.
