Description
Beautifully refurbished, Grade II listed example of Lutyens' early work in the heart of rural Surrey

Description
Historical Note
Munstead Place, completed in 1892, is considered to be one of Lutyens’s first sizeable commissions. Originally called Munstead Corner, Lutyens was appointed by the wine merchant Charles Heatley and his wife, Constance, on the recommendation of Gertrude Jekyll, whose own property was nearby. Designed with inspiration taken from Randolph Caldecott’s images of old West Surrey, Lutyens incorporated aspects learnt from his time in the offices of renowned architect and artist Ernest George and the works of Richard Norman Shaw to create a beautiful and characterful home constructed from Bargate stone and half-timbering all under a red-tiled roof. Within, Lutyens’s distinctive design is evident throughout, with fine joinery, well-proportioned fireplaces, leaded casement windows set in oak mullions and transoms, together with the main stair, considered to be 'one of Lutyens’s finest, of any period'*. Although no documents confirming Gertrude Jekyll’s involvement survive, given her acquaintance with the Heatleys, the proximity of her home and the distinctive Jekyll hallmarks in the beautifully structured garden design, it is likely she would have been party to it.

* Taken from David Cole, Sir Edwin Lutyens, the Arts and Crafts Houses

Munstead Place, which is Grade II listed, underwent an extensive renovation between 2009 and 2012 by the current owners. The result is a high specification finish with contemporary, practical family living in mind. The interior design compliments the architectural features and heritage of the property. The location of Munstead Place is private, tranquil and rural yet the amenities of Godalming town centre are only a mile away.
