Basts is Grade II* Listed of special architectural and or historic interest. It is reputed to have been built by Thomas Wall in about 1510 but stands on the site of an older house and manor. It is described in Eric Sandon’s “Suffolk Houses” as “a tall 3 storied timber framed structure with it’s double jetty’s and triple hipped roofs, with an appearance which suggests that it once stood alone at this corner of the village”. An oak front door leads to the entrance hall with under stair

The house possibly takes its name from William Bast, who was Prior of Woodbridge 1345 to 1350 and another William Bast, possibly the Prior’s father, held lands earlier in the 14th
Century in the parishes and manors adjacent to Grundisburgh. By the middle of the 15th century, the Bast lands or that part of them which lay in Grundisburgh had become vested in Isabel Gerrard by whom they were sold to Roger Palmer, later being transferred to John and Margery Wall, who’s son Thomas went to London, became a Salter and was chosen as Sheriff in Henry
vii’s reign when he made his fortune.
