Why you’ll like it:
Attractive on the approach, this house is archetypal for the period with beams on its gable, a decorative open porch and wide sash bay windows on its red-brick facade. It is set well back from the road behind low border walls, neat topiary and traditionally tiled path paving the way to the door. Once inside, you are greeted by a wide and welcoming entrance hall from which the true scale and beauty of the house become apparent. Decorated in a contemporary Farrow & Ball palette, the cool-grey walls complement the original oak floorboards, and your line of sight takes you through the depth of the house to the lush green garden beyond. The original features are immediately apparent with dado rails, deep skirting beautiful stained-glass windows within the front door and the secondary door to the entrance vestibule.

These classic features continue into the first elegant reception room to the left. Filled with natural light form the east, this room has a wide bay window almost covering the front wall, dressed in stylish plantation shutters in white bringing both form and function to the room. This is the perfect, grown-up sitting room with an open fire and ample space for comfortable furnishings so the family can cosy up together in the evening. Taking centre stage is the first of the period fireplaces which can be found in almost every room of the house. This one is open, so it warms the room beautifully, adding atmosphere to wintery evenings.

Moving through the house, clever storage has been crated below the stairs with drawers for shoes and space for coats to keep the house clutter free. The second sitting room sits to the rear of the house with doors leading out to the garden. It is a summer sitting room – although there is another open fire making it a room for all seasons. Again, it has incredible proportions and high ceilings festooned with classic period detail – although the windows and doors to the rear have been modernised and replaced with conservation standard timber-framed double glazing, in keeping with the other window frames in the house. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s Sulking Room pink, it is a restful space, and ideal for families with older children who may like to entertain independently on occasion.

Next door, the kitchen breakfast room is bright and welcoming with space for both informal and formal dining. Streamlined cabinetry with curved edges provide a wealth of kitchen storage solutions while dual combi ovens are placed in a tower for easy access and cleaning. The American fridge freezer was bought for the space so it will be staying, while the gas hob, washing machine and dishwasher are fully integrated. There are two further built-in storage cupboards within the dining area for family games, books and occasional kitchen appliances, while the second cupboard houses the boiler and household items.
From the kitchen, a side door leads out to the side-return which is secure at the front of the house with a generous bike store. Another covered store area gives access to the garden where a large decked area sits close to the house for dining alfresco in the last of the summer sunshine due to its westerly aspect. The lawn is lush and green with mature borders and decorative brick walls provide the perfect base for climbers. While mature planting ensures it is not overlooked in the slightest.

Stairs rise up to a vast landing area which adds to the feeling of space. The ceilings remain high and the bedrooms have all been decorated using a stylish and refined palette with some feature wallpapers. To the rear of the house there are two pretty and peaceful bedrooms with feature fireplaces and ample space for beds and freestanding furnishings. They sit alongside the family bathroom which is spacious and contemporary using shades of grey around a gleaming white bath suite. This has a shower over it and there is plenty of storage below the basin.

Moving to the front of the house, there are two further double bedrooms including the master bedroom which has a shuttered bay window to mirror the one in the sitting room below it. The master has access to a large walk in wardrobe. The current owners were looking to turn this into an en suite, so had started preparing for the plumbing to be brought through to the front of the house, so please ask for further details on this from the agent when viewing the property.
Up on the second floor, there are two further charming and tranquil double bedrooms alongside a chic shower room. These are ideal for teenagers looking for a little independence and a quiet space to study during exam time. The is also a huge amount of eaves storage running between the rooms, so the loft space has not been compromised in the conversion.

Agent’s thoughts:
This is a stunning home for families of all sizes. It is versatile and welcoming with a stylish and characterful interior which has been beautifully maintained by the current owners. It really does need to be seen to be appreciated.

Owner’s secret
“This has been a wonderful home for us since 2000. We raised our family here, so the house has evolved with us as the children grew. We have also enjoyed entertaining here – especially during the summer when the garden becomes a lovely extension of the summer living room.
We cannot fault this location for families as there is a wonderful sense of community within these roads, plus there’s plenty to entertain children nearby, and the local schools and nurseries are excellent. We no longer need so much space so we are looking to downsize, but we will really miss it here.”
