Beautiful character cottage with unique history and charm

Ellis Winters are privileged to offer for sale 'House of Dreams'. Dating back to 1645 this charming Grade Two listed cottage is located in the heart of one of Cambridgeshire's most sought after villages.

Built at the time of Vermuyden when the Fenn's drains were being dug, House of Dream's mansard roof was originally a thatch. According to the current owners, who have conducted extensive research into the history of the property, in the mid-20th century the home was pantiled in its current mansard roof design, giving the accommodation spacious and rare high headroom throughout virtually the entire home, both upstairs and down.

Comprising approximately 2145 sq ft the accommodation to the ground floor includes sitting room, dining room, kitchen/breakfast room, utility room and downstairs family bathroom. There are two staircases leading to the first floor which offers four bedrooms, and a four piece bathroom.

The present owners have felt passionately that during their guardianship every original feature should be preserved yet incorporated into a comfortable and welcoming family home. The ground floor accommodation offers a social layout that flows making 'House of Dreams' perfect for the many facets of a busy modern family life, entertaining and also quiet reflective peaceful living within this riverside village.

A superb feature in the sitting room is the brick built inglenook fireplace which once incorporated a bakers oven. Inset within this beautiful feature is a modern Hase wood burner making this remarkable room exceptionally cozy throughout the winter months. To the far end is a further brick built working open fireplace which the current owners also use for warmth – and toasting marshmallows!

Reached by two staircases at either end of the property the first floor offers a principle tranquil bedroom with exposed wooden floor, exposed oak beams and fitted wardrobe. The second and third bedrooms are both doubles and the fourth bedroom is currently used as a bright and spacious study area with multiple fitted cupboards which could be removed to offer further space if required.

Accessed via double wrought iron gates the gravel driveway offers a good size parking area and leads to the garage. The gardens which extend to the side and rear of the property are mainly laid to lawn with well stocked shrub and flower borders. There is a handy garden shed along with a summer house.

House of Dreams is situated in the very popular Saxon ring village of Holywell located on the banks of the river Great Ouse. The village is popular with walkers and is home to The Old Ferry Boat which is one of scores of pubs in the UK to lay claim to being the country's oldest. The nearby village of Needingworth is less than a mile away and offers a wealth of local amenities including a village convenience store and the Holywell primary school.

The benefits of being in the heart of the countryside can be enjoyed without being too far from it all. The picturesque town of St Ives is only 3 miles away and the larger town of Huntingdon is approx. 8 miles away. For a trip to the city, historic Cambridge is approx. 17 miles away and London easily accessible by train in under an hour from Huntingdon train station.

We have really enjoyed our time in House of Dreams, although that was not its name when we first purchased . Its name was Hereward Cottage and we were asked to return this beautiful cottage's name back to House of Dreams

House of Dreams brings many notable associations with national magazines, the royals, astronauts and even some of the very best musical greats.

We discovered that former owner Mrs Gratehead used to crochet House of Dreams tea cosies. Written in a letter, Mrs Gratehead confirmed that she sold House of Dreams Tea Cosies in the Lady Magazine where one was seen in the wedding gift collection for Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Legend has it that when Neil Armstrong went to Harrods and wanted something quintessentially English, and he had one too.

So how does Pink Floyd and Deep Purple all fit into this beautiful cottage and the Holywell Village? We discovered that another former owner - Terry Reid, had and still enjoys, a wonderful career in the music industry. As can be seen on Wikipedia, Terry was asked to join Led Zeplin and due to his contractual commitments, was unable to do so, but he did recommend Robert Plant into the role (see full details on Wikipedia – Terry Reid). Even today, villagers recount the very many famous musicians they used to see going into House of Dreams, and the music that came from the cottage too.

House of Dreams has been the perfect home to raise our family and it is difficult to imagine another property which will fit our needs as perfectly as this one has. That said now that the children are grown we feel it is time for another adventure and time for new owners to create more memories in this wonderful home.
