Directions
From Oxford take the A420 towards Swindon. After approximately 14 miles go past the turnings for Buckland/Bampton and the Carswell Golf and Country Club. Continue for just under half a mile. The entrance to Barcote Park is on the right at a small crossroads, through imposing stone and iron gates. Continue up the tree-lined driveway to the fork and keep right continue to the gated entrance which will be found straight ahead.

History

Barcote Manor was built for Lady Theodora Guest, a daughter of the Duke of Westminster, in 1876. It was used as a hunting lodge and was then sold to William West in 1881 and the West family lived in the house for 70 years. William West was a director of the Great Western Railway and named one of the “Manor class” locomotives after the house, Barcote Manor. The house was subsequently sold to the Mercantile Bank of India and later became the Barcote School of Coaching, an international boarding school. In 1996 the main manor house was converted into four houses, the principal part retaining the name ‘Barcote Manor’. The stables and coach houses were converted at the same time and comprise a further eight houses.
