House For Sale £2,100,000
Bigfrith Lane, Cookham Dean, Berkshire SL6

Description
Crowning the brow of a hill, set within the commons of Cookham Dean, this house sits in striking contrast to its luscious green surroundings. The house is characterised by its play of angles, volume and light, establishing a sense of space as large rooms flow from one to another. Wide lawns wrap around the house, evoking a peaceful sense of seclusion in the quiet village. A short drive from the historic towns of Marlow and Maidenhead, the house is perfectly positioned for quick access to the Chiltern Hills and London.

The Tour

Approached along a private gravel track, the house occupies a prime location in the village, bordered on three sides by National Trust commons, fields, and a private apple orchard. The profile of the house is characterised by a steeply pitched roof and a magnificent porthole window, referring to mid-century aesthetics. Large format paving forms shallow steps up to the entrance, bordered by lavender. The interiors are characterised throughout by wide panes of glazing drawing in natural light with far-reaching views of the surrounding hills. A carefully designed layout establishes a relationship between the different living areas but allows for retreating spaces.

Multi-paned glazing lines the wide entrance hall, which, along with white walls and pine floorboards, makes for a bright and welcoming space. To the left lies the expansive triple-aspect main living space. Full-height sliding doors lead out onto an elevated deck, which wraps around the house. A wide fireplace sits in the corner of the room, its tapered flue subtly rendered to blend in with the walls, while its recessed stone hearth adds depth and texture to the room.

The kitchen sits at the back of the plan. Here, wide French doors open out to the garden inviting the outside in. A window sits above the sink and frames the bows of the majestic oak tree immediately outside and treetops beyond. This is an understated, bright space with a pared-back palette of stone floor tiles and plain white cabinetry.

A dining room lies between the kitchen and the second reception room. A large bay window pulls light into the plan. Spanning the full depth of the house, the second living room overlooks the front and rear gardens. A classic Claygate brick fireplace framed by two panes of stained glass forms a focal point. Another set of French doors open to the garden, allowing a wonderful breeze and another bay window sits at the opposite end. There is currently a lift to the upper floor in this room. There are also a utility room and separate WC on the ground floor.

The house has two staircases one in the hallway and another climbing up the rear wall of the main living area. Upstairs the main bedroom is voluminous, defined by its steeply pitched roof and a remarkable porthole window, six feet across. Pine floorboards echo the exposed beams, which lead the eye towards the views beyond. Flanked by deep eaves, the room has plenty of storage space.

A wide landing is home to more storage and bookshelves and leads through to a bathroom and the original wing of the house. Here, there are three further bedrooms, including two generous doubles and a shower room. One of the bedrooms houses the lift. The original and extended wings of the house can be closed off to allow the upstairs living spaces to act as independent wings.

Above the open-fronted double garage is a studio that would make an excellent home office.

Outdoor Space

Over an acre of sweeping lawn stretches out around this beautiful house. Surrounded by mature trees, including an impressive oak, the garden is wonderfully secluded and has plenty of potential for further landscaping. A large south-west facing deck opens out from the living room with ample space for a dining table and chairs. At the rear, a patio marks the boundary between the house and lawns. The garden offers sweeping views over the neighbouring National Trust commons, farmland and the ancient Bisham Woods. There are also a separate wood store and outdoor WC.
