After the pre-existing rectory burned down in a fire in 1911, its owners, Oriel College, Oxford and the Bishop of Exeter, took the decision to have a larger replacement built closer to the passing lane and in a rather grander and more modern style, reminiscent of the Arts & Crafts architecture that
was popular at that time. The result is an impressive country house built of mellow red brick under a clay tile roof with integral staff rooms and its own coach house.
