History of the Church

Castlehead Church was built in 1782 and is a beautiful c-listed building in the Castlehead area of Paisley. The church has a long history and has fallen under many names over the years, including West Relief, Paisley Canal Street Relief, United Presbyterian, United Free Church, and Church of Scotland, before changing to Castlehead in 1975 until its closure in 2011. The church underwent extensive renovation in the late 1860s, with new high-arched windows (which still feature in the building) replacing the original square windows. New burials were stopped in the church’s graveyard in 1901, and among those buried here include Scottish poet Robert Tannahill, who was born in nearby Castle Street, and the maternal great-grandparents of us president Ronald Reagan.

After the church closed in 2011, it was put on the Buildings at Risk Register due to no use being identified for the building. It was sold to developers in 2014 and work to convert the church to luxurious two and three-bedroom apartments have been underway since 2017.
