Canterton House is believed to have been built in the 1930s and is a classic Arts and Crafts house typical of that period with rendered and tile hung elevations under a tiled roof. The house was positioned specifically to take full advantage of some wonderful views taking in much of the Marshwood Vale below. Completing the perfect country house are the 3 acres of gardens and woodland that afford the property complete privacy, yet all within walking distance of a public house and short motoring distance of the beach.

As you would expect of a house of this period it has huge character with features that include open fireplaces, arched and bay windows, panelled doors and walls, tiled and stone windowsills and picture rails to name but a few. The accommodation is simply laid out with the sitting room and the family/dining room on the Southwest side of the house, each with an open fireplace - one having a wood burning stove. The kitchen lies open-plan to the family/dining room and is equipped with a comprehensive range of floor mounted units and cupboards with a solid fuel fired Rayburn that also produces hot water, an electric double oven and an lpg hob, with space for a dishwasher. In addition, on the ground floor there is a cloakroom/shower room and, at one end of the property, a standalone utility room. On the first floor there are three good bedrooms, the principal of which has bifold doors out onto a terrace that takes in the best of the views across the Marshwood Vale, from Lamberts Castle through to Pilsdon Pen and the second bedroom having similar, more westerly facing views, towards the sea at Lyme Regis. The principal bedroom has an en suite dressing room and shower room. In addition, there is a third bedroom and a family bathroom equipped with a shower over the bath. On the second floor there are two further bedrooms.
The property has oil fired central heating and private drainage.
To one side of the house there is a large garage with various storage areas and an electric roller blind door, above which there is a studio, reached by a stairway which runs along the side of the garage, that has a living room and a shower room.

The grounds are a particular feature of the property and have an ethereal, rather Jurassic feel to them, becoming less formal the higher the up the hill one gets. Beside the house there is a South and West facing paved terrace, above which there is a series of terraces with intertwining paths, gloriously planted with an array of Rhododendrons, Hydrangeas, Gunneras and numerous other mature plants. Within the gardens there is a formal ornamental pond and a greenhouse. Above the formal areas there is a lovely mature deciduous wood that stretches up the side of Hardown Hill with a pedestrian access onto the hill itself. The house lies within an aonb and Hardown Hill is a protected site. On the right-hand side of the house a driveway leads through to what is now used as a covered parking area beyond which there is parking for a number of cars. The covered parking area was formerly used as a chapel by a previous owner. Across the lane from the house a gateway leads through to a meadow area that is planted with an array of fruit trees including Apple, Pear, Peach and Fig, with to one side a vegetable and fruit growing area with Raspberries, Blackcurrants and Gooseberries.

The property lies just outside the village of Morcombelake, which has a well stocked farm shop. The sea is accessible at Chideock and Charmouth, with walking along the coast path. The market town of Bridport lies approximately 4 miles to the East. Bridport has a history of rope-making and is now a gateway to the Jurassic, World Heritage coastline at nearby West Bay. It has a variety of independent shops, supermarkets, public houses and restaurants catering for a range of tastes andexcellent arts and music events. Bridport is conveniently placed for Dorchester and Weymouth to the east and Axminster to the west. Walking, water sports and riding opportunities are plentiful in the area. Communication links are good with road links along the A35 and mainline stations at Maiden Newton and Axminster. Charmouth and Lyme Regis are also just a short motoring distance away.
