Tyndrum is a handsome stone Detached Edwardian House dating from 1906, and one of few owners. Little surprise – it is a wonderful home in a fantastic location within one of the most admired corners of Bearsden.

Our client, who acquired Tyndrum almost 25 years ago, retained all that made the house so special (its glorious original features including many superb examples of Arts and Crafts craftsmanship) but significantly upgraded the subjects to be a home fit for the new Millennium. This included the creation of two en-suite shower rooms, a vastly improved kitchen space with French doors to the garden and by making the lounge and the dining room open plan, an arrangement far more fitting for modern family living. The more formal lounge, with its wood panelling and stunning fireplace, remains a retreat for entertaining or simply in which to relax.

The original drawing room was on the first floor of the house, and this is now Tyndrum’s principal bedroom equipped with its wonderful plaster ceiling and period fireplace and display cabinets – a truly lovely room with bay window and bespoke made bedroom wardrobes.

From the Edwardian panelled doors, with decorative finger plates, to the ceiling plasterwork and the exquisite Arts and Crafts features, this house is a home full of detail, character, and style but one also supported by modern services and fitments to make Tyndrum a rather special family home.

It has a range of quality fitted kitchen units of an oak grain style in cream against which are solid granite worktops and, the feature of the room, its large centre island that includes a breakfast bar. Dominating the kitchen is its striking red Aga (gas) and there are additional appliances of a built-in dishwasher, combination microwave oven, glass fronted wine fridge and a free-standing American style fridge freezer. As well as windows to the rear and to the east side, there is a set of French doors to the garden.

Gardens

To the front, and fronting Westbourne Drive, there is a stone wall behind which is a central bed with mature planting including rhododendrons for screening. The driveway is an ‘In & Out’ driveway (very convenient) as well as extending up the easterly side of the house to the property’s garage. The driveway is block paved and to the east and west boundaries are small sections of grass flanked by dense planting with an array of shrubs and trees. The rear garden is enclosed and accessed via a gate between the house and the garage. The rear garden is a far more substantial area and has a patio running across the back of the house, beyond which is a two-bed terrace with stone retaining wall. Two sets of steps and a slabbed pathway ramp lead up to a lawned garden where there are two further slabbed patios to capture the sun at other points of the day. The whole back garden is enclosed by fencing and established privet hedging and is very private.

The garage is a detached timber garage with double doors for access and a courtesy door to the side as well as a window.
Situation

Tyndrum is located within Bearsden’s Conservation District and is on one of Bearsden’s most admired addresses. It is but a 5-minute walk (about a quarter mile) to Bearsden Cross and the excellent shops, cafes, and services to be found there and just about half a mile or so from Bearsden Railway Station. For those with children, school catchment is Bearsden Primary with secondary schooling at the high performing Bearsden Academy (ranked 6th in Scotland in 2021). Also, within Bearsden and not far away, on Ledcameroch Road, is the Junior School for The High School of Glasgow (its Senior School just south of Bearsden at Anniesland) and St Nicholas’s Primary on Duntocher Road. Just opened is the Bearsden Early Years Centre on the site of the former Library. The new Library is located within Bearsden’s Community Hub at The Cross.

Properties such as Tyndrum come along very seldom (the few owners of Tyndrum being testament to this) and as such this is a real opportunity to acquire one of the more substantial stone period homes in this highly regarded Glasgow suburb.

Not far from Tyndrum, a couple of streets over, on Thorn Road is Thorn Park, Thorn Tennis Club and Bearsden Golf Course. All great assets to have literally on one’s doorstep. Bearsden has a tremendous amount to offer and has some wonderful countryside within just a few minutes’ drive including the drama of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park which can be reached, by car, in just over 20 minutes. Glasgow’s vibrant West End is a 10-to-15-minute drive away and the City Centre can be reached within half an hour (off peak).
